What is Egg Craft?

Egg Craft, otherwise known as Egg Decoration is considered to be one of the oldest crafts known to man. Most countries around the world have some sort of tradition involving egg decoration.

Modern egg decoration takes inspiration from the work of Carl Faberge, dating back to around 1885. Faberge, a jeweller, was commissioned to create a gift for the weeding anniversary of Russian Czar Alexander III. The anniversary happened to fall on Easter - a significant celebration within the Orthodox faith in Russia. As it is tradition to echange decorated eggs during Easter, Faberge used his talents as a jeweller to turn the egg into a work of art, using gold, silver, and various precious gems. The Czar's wife was so pleased that Faberge was commissioned to create a new egg each year. Various other Royal families have commissioned pieces since, and his work is highly sought after. His work still lives on today in the style of decoration which takes his name.

As well as Faberge, modern decorated eggs are carved, painted and sculpted, all of which can produce breath taking results.

The Eggs we use within the club are Duck, Emu, Goose, Hen, Ostrich, Rhea and Quail. We do NOT use eggs from protected birds.
